[edit] Life Points

The Sky's Limit uses a system called Life Points in character creation, these are used as a currency when creating a player and can be used to increase skills, increase statistics, exchanged for money and equipment or to unlock more powerful sub-races. This ensures that starting characters are roughly equal, you could create a Human Basic with full ablative plate armour and a plasma hand cannon, but he wouldn't know how to use either to any real effect, or you could create a daring thief with as many levels in Sneak and Pickpocket as you can afford, but is stark naked as a result. Generally players receive 100 Life Points (or LP for short) to start with and they do not have to spend all of it. Also, whilst some things cost LP, some things (like disadvantages) gain you LP which can help tremendously with more complex characters.

[edit] Statistics

The Sky's Limit uses six general stats for characters, these represent physical and mental ability using numbers and help determine a characters aptitude in various areas. These stats use a percentile system, meaning stats start at 0 and increasing up to 100.

Attack (ATK): This shows a characters physical strength, tactical skill and helps determine how much they can pick up. It also helps determine a characters Hit Points and damage dealt with unarmed attacks.

Defence (DEF): This shows a characters toughness, steadfastness and patience. Along with Attack it helps determine how may Hit Points a character has and how much a character can carry.

Agility (AGI): This is a characters dexterity and speed, defining how fast someone can move and the rate at which they can travel. It determines who strikes first in combat, if someone can see you when hiding.

Magic (MAG): This shows a characters ability to alter the world around them, and also their visibility to others who have the same abilities. It determines how well someone can use the various forms of magic and is also the only stat that can be zero (for a player character).

Intelligence (INT): This is a characters intelligence, and defines well, how intelligent they are. The lowest INT for a player character is four, as this determines how well a character can learn, and anything below four seriously inhibits the speed at which a character picks up new skills or increases their level in existing skills.

Personality (PER): This shows how well a character can interact with the people around them, for better or worse. It helps determine how likely people are to believe what you say, how well you can sing and act and also how well you can intimidate others.

These six skills are determined by your race (which comes later) and by the distribution of extra points, at a maximum of 5 per stat, and extra points that can be purchased for 10LP each up until the racial max, above which it costs 20LP per point, this represents going above and beyond the physiological limits of your body. However if a characters MAG stat is zero, this cannot be increased normally and other ways must be used.

To work out the number of hit points you have, add together your DEF and AGI and divide by two. To work out how many magic points you have, times your MAG stat by 1/10 of your INT. Your hit points represent your health. If they drop below 0, you die. Magic points represent the mental energy needed to use magic, if your magic points are reduced to zero, you cannot cast any magic, however if you cast a spell and do not have enough MP to cast it, the difference between the cost and the number you have remaining are taken away from your health.

[edit] Races

In The Sky's Limit, there are four major base races which represent the four major powers in the area around the Sol system. These are the Humans, the Fae, the Guard and the AI. Each race has one or two sub base races, and several other sub races. Main sub races are free to use, but others can cost LP and may require you speak with your GM beforehand. You may only take levels in your own sub-race. Please pick your race from the races listed in Races

[edit] Homeworld

For The Sky's Limit, the world or colony your character comes from determines many thing about your character, it can give abilities, skills or access to occupations. The home worlds you can pick from are limited by your race, although there are a few 'open worlds', worlds where the population is highly mixed. Please go to the Homeworlds section to choose a homeworld.

[edit] Skills

The Sky's Limit uses a percentile skill system to determine the outcome of most events. Some events (such as walking normally, breathing, clearing small obstacles etc) succeed automatically and do not require a skill roll (NOTE: Please do not test this with your Game Master, otherwise you may find breathing becomes very difficult). For everything else, you must make a roll for it. A list of skills can be found here.

Depending on your race you will gain a number of levels in skills as standard. On top of this, you can purchase new skills at a cost of 10LP which start at half of the linked stat for the skill and you can also purchase extra levels in skills for 1LP each up to a maximum of 20 extra levels. If you have to make a skill roll, you must roll a d100 and roll UNDER your skill level in that area. Every time you successfully make a skill roll, you gain experience, which is dealt with later on.

[edit] Occupation

In The Sky's Limit each character has an occupation. This represents their job or vocation in life and gives them access to skills and equipment. Make the choice of occupation carefully, as whilst all occupations are free at character generation, it costs 100LP to change your occupation later on. Your occupation also gives your character a chance to make money, however having the occupation is not the same as having a job. It merely means you have trained in the area and allows you to get a job in that area. Please go to the Occupations section to pick an occupation.

[edit] Abilities

Your character can spend their LP on various abilities ranging from flight to tougher skin, but characters can also purchase abilities that give disadvantages and give you LP which can then be spent on other things. Please note that a character with too many disadvantages WILL be rejected. Use them sparingly as they take twice their cost in LP to remove. A full list of abilities can be found on the Abilities page.

[edit] Equipment

Your character needs equipment to survive. Whether it is food, clothing, weapons, ammunition, transport or housing, all of this costs money. Each character gets as standard the following items:

  • $500
  • Common Jacket
  • Common Shirt
  • Common Trousers/Skirt
  • Good Shoes
  • General provisions for 7 days

and

  • A house/apartment/ship

Your GM will talk to you about this once you have completed your character, so leave it for now. Some occupations may alter or add to this equipment and this is listed under the occupations section. You can also buy more equipment as listed in the Equipment Listing and if you have any LP left, you can exchange it into money at a rate of 1LP for $50. This can only be done now, not at a later date.

[edit] Finish

Now you have your character, you need to fill out a character sheet which is available in various formats on the downloads thread and hand it in for approval. Then you can start playing.
